American movies in particular have mocked the middle aged man going through his mid life crisis: Freshly divorced, driving a red sports car and on the prowl for his fountain of youth (read women half his age).
Midlife is a fact of life. We are born and eventually die. Somewhere in the middle, if we are fortunate to be alive, is midlife. It becomes a crisis only because it is poorly understood.
It can be more appropriately termed as a Midlife Rebirth. The outer planets square and oppose their natal positions for the only time (except Saturn) in your entire life. No one alive will see a Pluto opposing Pluto transit..unless they live to be 248 years old. We go through Saturn opposing its natal position three times at most, and once each for Neptune and Uranus opposing their natal positions in the birth chart.
These are solid transits that last for a good 8 years or so beginning from around 36 until 44-45. Our lives will be broken down to its very fundamental components (transit Pluto square natal Pluto), we will feel lost and disillusioned for a while (transit Neptune square natal Neptune), find new inspiration (transit Uranus opposition Natal Uranus) and create order out of chaos (Transit Saturn oppose Natal Saturn).
Every single human who lives to be 50 has gone through these four transits. A rebirth, so to speak. Life is giving us a second chance, to complete what we couldn’t finish, to release that which is past and to prepare for the next volume (not chapter) of our lives.
Transit Pluto Square Natal Pluto
Midlife transits begin between the ages of 36 to 38 with transit Pluto squaring its natal placement. If one has Pluto in the quadrant houses, the world may come crashing down. Or certainly feel that way.
Pluto will systematically crumble all structures in your life. You think you love your job? Just wait until transit Pluto enters the 1st and squares your natal 10th placement. You might feel like the walls are closing in on you at your workplace, like your boss or colleagues are out to get you. Or you may fear losing your job every single day until the square energies dissipates. But, Pluto does not give up easily. It wobbles in and out of exact square aspect for a year or more until you are left with debris of your old life.
I am not one to romanticize or glamorize Pluto transits at all and am going to be upfront to say that it will be painful and very stressful, Remember though that millions of others born with +/- 3 years of you will be going through this transit at the same time. Maybe we should all form support groups eh?
Jokes apart ~ the key is to get out of the tunnel on the other side. There are no remedies for this transit. Think about it~ One cannot have a rebirth, like a phoenix, without being burnt to metaphorical ashes. So, this has to happen for us to truly feel like we are heading into the next phase of our adult lives.
The tough times will pass. Remember to breathe and just keep swimming.
Transit Neptune square Natal Neptune
Transit Neptune closely follows Pluto, or sometimes overlaps. I possibly would prefer them overlapping as the transit Neptune squaring natal Neptune might feel like a drug induced high for 2 years and we could completely blank out the destruction caused by Pluto.
This transit leaves us confused. We are picking up the pieces of our life after Pluto moves through it like a tornado and we are lost. Where do we begin rebuilding? What do we do? Is this all we are left with? Is this all there is? We might be disillusioned with our achievements and accomplishments during this transit.
Neptune is far more insidious than Pluto because it clouds our thinking and emotions. Unlike the combative, adrenaline infused energy of Pluto, Neptune could be compared to being zoned out and depressed. Just drifting on autopilot. This is the period when many begin drinking heavily (Neptune effect).
Again, no remedy and its a transit meant to give you a new direction in life. So plod through without damaging your liver or your brain because the next transit will be when you come into your own.
Transit Uranus opposite Natal Uranus.
This is when your true self steps out into the world. You won’t give a shit about others opinions anymore. We might decide to get tattoo’s for the first time in our life despite our conservative cultural background. Or decide to color our hair pink. Or decide to go on a solo trip to wherever.
We will have a year of firsts. Because we now know time is running out. Why keep waiting to have fun, to go on that adventure, to just be ourselves?! Don’t go overboard though because next up is Saturn.
Transit Saturn opposite Natal Saturn
The strict parent steps in to control the unruly middle aged adult. Sort of a stock taking or inventory checking. After the freedom loving, chaotic Uranus, Saturn will come in to create structure and form in our new lives. Those who got divorced during the Pluto square Pluto transit might get married again during this transit. People might move countries and begin new lives. Or change their career to a new domain. for eg- the 45 yr old banker who turns baker.
Saturn being the score keeper will make us pay if we have been reckless. So don’t do anything you might regret during your Pluto, Neptune and Uranus transits.
